India and Russia agree to bring 70,000 Indian workers amid expanded trade talks

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told a parliamentary panel that Russia will take about 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year as the two countries push to broaden trade, energy cooperation and diplomatic efforts on Ukraine.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed a parliamentary consultative committee on the expanding scope of India-Russia relations, noting that Russia has agreed to receive around 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year, especially for construction and logistics projects. He said both sides aim to rebalance bilateral trade by boosting Indian exports in automobiles, pharmaceuticals, food, marine products, engineering goods, chemicals and textiles, and mentioned ongoing talks on an India-Eurasian Economic Union free-trade agreement, the Chennai-Vladivostok corridor, the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Northern Sea Route.

On energy, Jaishankar stressed the need to protect Indian consumers by diversifying supply sources. The minister also updated the panel on India’s active diplomatic push to end the Ukraine conflict, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek and Jaishankar’s own engagements with Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers at the UN. Additionally, he reported that about 140 Indian nationals have been released from Russian service and that India is negotiating the whereabouts of 55 others while cracking down on recruiters. The briefing tied together economic cooperation, energy security, diplomatic initiatives and the humanitarian effort to free Indians serving in the Russian military.

Why it matters
