The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Sahyadri arrived in Vladivostok on Oct 10, kicking off the 2026 edition of the bilateral INDRA naval exercise, which runs from Oct 13-18.
The Indian Navy’s indigenously built stealth frigate INS Sahyadri reached Vladivostok on Oct 10, marking the start of the 2026 INDRA naval exercise with Russia. Running from Oct 13 to Oct 18, the drill brings together personnel from both navies for harbour-based engagements and joint sea operations designed to enhance operational coordination and interoperability. The programme includes professional exchanges, maritime evolutions, and cultural interactions, reflecting India’s broader MAHASAGAR vision for maritime engagement.
The Ministry of Defence has not released specifics about the sea-phase activities. INDRA, first held in 2003, has expanded over the years to include tri-service components and regular naval drills, with the 2025 edition taking place off Chennai. One outlet iteration underscores the deepening defence partnership that also covers joint projects such as the BrahMos missile, licensed production of Su-30MKI aircraft, and the S-400 air-defence system.
Why it matters
The drill showcases expanding India-Russia naval cooperation and signals strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region.
