India and U.S. Near Completion of Trade Pact Ahead of Rubio's Visit
Sergio Gor said the main framework of the India-U.S. trade agreement is finished, with only detailed issues still being negotiated.
At the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Delhi, Sergio Gor declared that the overarching framework of the India-U.S. trade agreement is now in place, leaving only granular matters to be resolved. He emphasized that the sheer scale of the two economies and the multitude of sectors make the negotiations particularly intricate. The United States is re-examining parts of its trade strategy following a Supreme Court ruling that curtailed its use of emergency powers to impose tariffs.
Piyush Goyal added that talks have moved down to specific products and exact tariff percentages. Gor pointed out that the dialogue has been ongoing for about eighteen months, and he expressed confidence that a final accord will be reached soon, especially with Senator Marco Rubio's upcoming visit to India.
Why it matters
A near-final India-U.S. trade deal could reshape market access and tariffs for two of the world's largest economies.
