India and US Trade Negotiations Stalled at a Difficult Impasse, Says Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the India-US trade talks have hit a plateau, making further concessions hard, while both sides remain engaged.

During remarks in Munich, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the ongoing India-US trade talks as having arrived at a plateau, implying that further concessions from either side would be extremely challenging. She suggested that any remaining room for maneuver could still be used if both governments agree. Sitharaman emphasized that India enjoys a trade surplus with the United States, while Washington aims to reduce the imbalance.

In a related development, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met USTR Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee, discussing a mutually beneficial interim agreement. The earlier February framework stalled after the US Supreme Court invalidated the legal basis for the preferential tariff scheme the US had offered. Sitharaman also dismissed claims of a “Lindsay Graham bill” influencing Europe-India negotiations. Overall, the talks remain active but face significant hurdles.
