India approves ₹27,370 crore transmission upgrade for Andhra Pradesh renewable grid

The central government cleared a ₹27,370 crore power transmission expansion in Andhra Pradesh, with the first phase slated for 2029-30.

The central government has given the go-ahead to a ₹27,370 crore transmission project in Andhra Pradesh under the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III programme. The plan, put forward by the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, calls for constructing 7,872 circuit kilometres of 400 kV and 220 kV lines and adding 9,500 MVA of substation capacity, including five new 400/220 kV stations. Central funding of ₹54,082 crore will offset intra-state transmission charges, and the first phase is expected to be operational by the 2029-30 fiscal year.

Key nodes such as Mudigubba, Talupula, Porumamilla, Ramayapatnam and Koppaka will host major pooling stations and substations. The scheme supports the state’s clean-energy targets, aiming to evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable generation and install battery storage and pumped hydro capacity. Officials note that without the upgrade, projected peak demand could outstrip supply, leaving a significant share of energy unserved by 2035-36.

Why it matters

The upgrade will enable large-scale renewable power delivery and help meet Andhra Pradesh’s rising electricity demand.
