India approves 654 MW of electricity exports to Nepal through 2026

India’s power ministry announced approval for a 654 MW electricity export to the Nepal Electricity Authority, to be supplied 18 hours each day until the end of December 2026. The arrangement includes up to 600 MW transmitted over the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and an additional 54 MW via the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line. The decision responds to flash floods on August 26 that devastated the Trishuli and Lhende Khola river basins, destroying infrastructure and cutting roughly 550 MW of Nepal’s hydro capacity, which previously stood at 4,200 MW.

Indian officials indicated that the extra power will assist Nepal during this emergency and will not noticeably affect India’s domestic supply. The export level will be reassessed in December 2026, with any adjustments to take effect from January 2027. The move underscores the longstanding energy cooperation between the two neighbours.
