INDIA bloc expands November 1 rally to include students and civil society groups

The opposition INDIA bloc will hold a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Nov 1, now joined by student bodies and civil-society organisations demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.

Opposition parties forming the INDIA bloc convened in New Delhi and confirmed a rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1 to call for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest will now incorporate student organisations, including AISA president Neha Bora and SFI’s Aishe Ghosh, alongside civil-society figures such as Yogendra Yadav and lawyer Prashant Bhushan. A coordination committee of roughly ten to fifteen Delhi-based leaders, including Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien and CPI(ML) one outlet chief Dipankar Bhattacharya, will oversee logistics.

The rally follows a series of recent demonstrations that marched to the Supreme Court and the President’s office, prompting criticism from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Delhi Police have granted a no-objection certificate and reserved the venue from October 25 to November 3. Rahul Gandhi has urged all protest groups to unite under the slogan “all protests are one.”

Why it matters

The protest unites opposition, students and activists against India's election chief, raising stakes for electoral oversight.
