India digitises land records, assigns unique IDs to millions of parcels
India has computerised almost all land records and is linking them to precise geographic data, giving each parcel a 14-digit identifier.
India’s land administration has reached near-complete digital coverage, with 99.90% of textual Records of Rights entered into computer systems. Through the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme, each of the 40.58 crore parcels has been assigned a 14-digit Bhu-Aadhaar identifier, linking legal records to exact locations. Georeferencing is complete for roughly 76.16% of parcels, and spatial-textual integration stands at 85.24%.
The programme also modernises property registration, with 98.96% of Sub-Registrar Offices computerised and most revenue courts linked to a case-management system. Urban mapping uses drones and LiDAR under the NAKSHA programme, producing high-resolution models and urban property cards. The system was showcased to officials from several African nations and the UNDP as a model for global digital land governance.
