India faces capacity gap as launch ambitions outpace current rocket fleet

India can build rockets but may lack enough launch slots and heavy-lift capability to meet its expanding space programme through 2030.

India’s launch arsenal has grown to encompass legacy ISRO rockets such as PSLV and LVM-3, newer medium-lift GSLV-Mk2, the small-satellite SSLV, and private entrants like Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 and Agnikul’s orbital vehicle. Despite this diversity, the nation’s roadmap now includes Chandrayaan-4, human spaceflight, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and large Earth-observation and communication satellites, all of which demand medium- to heavy-lift capability.

Historical launch rates of about five orbital missions per year are unlikely to sustain the projected demand through 2030, even with optimistic upgrades and private sector participation. Commercial customers also need reliable, frequent access across payload classes, not just occasional slots on small launchers.
