India faces massive shortfall in EV chargers as demand surges toward 2030

A landmark analysis released in September 2026 by Rubix Data Sciences, referencing baseline forecasts from the Confederation of Indian Industry, projects that India will require 13.2 lakh public electric-vehicle charging points by 2030. Current infrastructure stands at 67,657 public chargers and 1,139 battery-swap interfaces, a rise from 5,000 in early 2022 but still a fraction of the target. The majority of existing chargers—about 73%—are below 30 kW, with only a handful exceeding 240 kW, meaning most are unsuitable for rapid long-haul trips.
Distribution gaps are especially acute in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, where stations often sit empty. New technical frameworks such as the Light Electric Vehicle Combined Charging System (LECCS) and universal Type-2 sockets aim to standardise charging for two- and three-wheelers, yet heavy commercial vehicles will still need higher-capacity fast chargers. The findings underscore a critical infrastructure bottleneck that could hinder India's electric mobility ambitions.
