India hits 110 million farmer ID milestone five months early, boosting digital agriculture

The government announced that 110 million farmer IDs were created by Oct 23, well before the March 2027 deadline, to streamline delivery of agricultural schemes.

On Oct 23, the Indian government reported that it had generated 110 million farmer identification numbers, achieving the goal five months before the March 2027 deadline announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the IDs will create a unified digital record for farmers, making it easier to verify eligibility for subsidies and other schemes. The IDs are being linked to the Integrated Fertiliser Management System, which has already led to a 37.56 percent drop in fertiliser sales in selected border districts between the 2025 and 2026 kharif seasons, and about a 25 percent rationalisation in pilot districts nationwide.

By tying sales to farmer IDs, crop needs and land records through platforms such as AgriStack, the government aims to curb cross-border smuggling and improve the targeting of support. The ministry highlighted that the achievement supports its broader push for digital agriculture and more transparent program implementation. Future efforts will focus on converting the digital database into concrete benefits for farmers across the country.

Why it matters

Accelerated farmer ID rollout can make subsidy distribution more accurate and curb fertiliser misuse, impacting millions of Indian cultivators.
