India knocked out of Hockey World Cup semifinals after 1-3 defeat to Netherlands
India’s men’s hockey team lost 1-3 to the Netherlands, ending any chance of reaching the World Cup semifinals.
India’s men’s hockey side fell 1-3 to the Netherlands in their second-round World Cup match, a loss that extinguishes any prospect of a semifinal berth. The Dutch, reigning Olympic champions, secured goals through Duco Telgenkamp (41st minute), Tjep Hoedemakers (51st) and Thijs van Dam (55th), after a first-half stalemate. Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty-corner in the 52nd minute to give India a brief lifeline, but the Netherlands responded quickly to restore a two-goal margin.
Earlier, India had failed to capitalize on several penalty corners and missed opportunities from Rajinder Singh and Dilpreet Singh. The defeat leaves India winless in the second round, with only a final group match against Argentina remaining before they move to the fifth-eighth place classification. Their earlier loss to England means even a victory over Argentina would be insufficient to reach the semifinals.
Why it matters
The result ends India's hopes of competing for the World Cup title, affecting their final tournament standing.
