India launches low-cost retrofit kit to slash truck particulate emissions by 90%

At a press briefing, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the government has cleared AIS 228 standards for retrofitting rear-emission control devices on pre-BS6 heavy vehicles. The retrofit, created by researchers from IIT Delhi, costs roughly ₹4,000-5,000 and can reduce particulate matter by 90% and nitrogen oxides by 60%, delivering emissions similar to a BS6 truck. Gadkari appealed to vehicle manufacturers to treat the scrappage programme as a commercial opportunity, offering discounts to buyers who surrender old trucks for new ones.
The Parivartan initiative, launched for the Delhi-NCR region, targets the removal of more than 2 lakh aging trucks and buses and includes incentives for purchasing BS6 or electric models. He also highlighted the success of Bharat NCAP, noting lower testing costs and plans to expand the safety programme from October 2027. The dual strategy of retrofitting and accelerated scrappage is intended to curb air pollution while revitalising the commercial-vehicle market.
