India launches multilingual digital portal to streamline livestock insurance for farmers
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying rolled out a new multilingual Livestock Insurance Portal to digitize policy issuance and claims for Indian farmers.
Today the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying launched a Livestock Insurance Portal designed to bring all aspects of its insurance scheme onto one digital interface. The system will handle policy issuance, claims, monitoring and reporting, and is offered in Hindi, English and eleven regional languages to reach a broad base of farmers. Under the National Livestock Mission, the scheme insures milch animals, pack animals and species such as goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits, yak and mithun, with the central and state governments covering 85% of premiums.
The government has recently increased subsidy eligibility to ten cattle units per household, and more than 1.3 million animals were covered in the 2025-26 fiscal year. The portal is expected to cut paperwork, boost transparency and accelerate claim settlements, particularly after natural calamities, according to expert Anil Kumar Angrish of NIPER. By centralising data, officials hope to enhance risk protection and support the sustainability of livestock-dependent livelihoods.
