India limits sale of cold combo drugs for children under four
The Indian government has extended restrictions on fixed-dose cold medicines containing chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride for kids younger than four.
The Centre has tightened rules on fixed-dose combination (FDC) cold medicines that contain chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride when used for children below four years of age. Initially imposed in April 2025, the limitation was re-examined by the Drug Technical Advisory Board in February 2026, which decided to expand the ban to every formulation with those ingredients. As a result, manufacturers, sellers and distributors must adhere to the new restrictions across the country.
Health officials in New Delhi are warning parents to be vigilant about product contents and to avoid giving these combination drugs to young children. The move reflects ongoing safety concerns about the effects of these compounds on toddlers. The policy aims to reduce potential adverse reactions and ensure safer treatment options for pediatric cold symptoms.
Why it matters
Parents must avoid unsafe cold medicines for toddlers, as the government now bans all combos with specific ingredients.
