India mandates BIS certification for smartphone screen protectors starting April 1, 2027
From April 1 2027, India will require Bureau of Indian Standards certification for all smartphone screen protectors to curb low-quality products.
A new notification issued on September 21 extends the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 to include smartphone screen protectors, requiring compliance with Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 from April 1 2027. This is the 66th product category added, joining items like smartphones, laptops and chargers. Optiemus Infracom, which has set up a Noida plant using Corning technology, plans to ship tempered-glass protectors from January 2027 and expects significant revenue from the segment.
ICEA chairman Pankaj Mohindroo highlighted that the mandate will protect consumers, generate up to 60,000 jobs and boost GST collections, while positioning India as a global hub for screen-protector manufacturing. The regulation seeks to eliminate sub-standard imports and foster a quality-led, Made-in-India ecosystem.
