India plans AI-driven overhaul of power grid to boost reliability and renewables
Union ministers announced plans to embed artificial intelligence in the national power grid to improve management, forecast outages and enable predictive maintenance.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi told participants at a Central Electricity Authority brainstorming conclave that the government intends to adopt artificial intelligence across India’s power system. With total generation capacity now at 555 GW and a further 70 GW slated for 2026-27, officials said AI can help manage the expanding network by accurately predicting electricity demand, renewable output and potential outages, and by supporting predictive maintenance.
Khattar emphasized a shift from reactive to proactive grid operation, noting the importance of skilled manpower, data governance and cybersecurity. Joshi added that AI could improve renewable forecasting, real-time balancing, storage optimisation and reduce curtailment, while also identifying congestion and extracting more value from existing infrastructure. The conclave, organized by the CEA with the Central Board of Irrigation and Power and FICCI, brought together senior officials and industry leaders to discuss these initiatives.
Why it matters
AI could make India’s power supply more reliable, affordable and better suited to renewable growth.
