India plans computer-based testing for NEET as part of nationwide exam overhaul

A senior Ministry of Education official confirmed that a national computer-based testing (CBT) infrastructure strategy is under development to transition NEET-UG from its current pen-and-paper format to an online exam. The strategy aims to close geographic gaps in test-centre availability, set uniform centre-level standards, and support a broader shift of all entrance exams to CBT. The National Testing Agency already conducts exams such as JEE-Main and CUET-UG in computer mode.

The migration plan will consider sequencing, infrastructure needs and equity impacts for rural, women and low-connectivity candidates. Implementation awaits the recommendations of the High-Level Task Force headed by Nandan Nilekani, as well as concurrence from the Health Ministry and National Medical Commission. The move follows a recent NEET paper leak that sparked student protests and led to the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the task force.
