India pledges stronger global partnership for disaster risk reduction
Principal Secretary P K Mishra urged deeper international cooperation on disaster risk reduction, stressing the need to protect development and cut economic losses over the next decade.
At a United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction gathering, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister P K Mishra emphasized that rising climate impacts, rapid urbanisation and expanding infrastructure are creating intertwined disaster risks. While early-warning systems have saved lives, economic losses remain high, prompting Mishra to advocate for integrated, cross-sectoral strategies and accelerated delivery of the Sendai Framework goals by 2030.
He referenced India’s Ten-Point Agenda on Disaster Risk Reduction (2016), the 2025 amendments to the Disaster Management Act, and the establishment of a G20 Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction during its 2023 presidency. Mishra also stressed the role of AI, machine learning and multi-hazard early-warning tools, and called for resilient infrastructure, stronger urban institutions, and nature-based solutions. He concluded with three priorities: better understanding of emerging risks, more effective resilience investment, and reinforced institutions through practical international cooperation.
