India positioned as key player in future semiconductor manufacturing, says MeitY secretary

At the launch of Semicon India 2026, MeitY secretary S Krishnan declared that India has entered the semiconductor arena as a significant manufacturing and design destination. He linked this development to the country's massive population and the resulting surge in electronic product consumption that will drive chip demand. Citing geopolitical tensions, Krishnan emphasized the strategic importance of diversifying supply chains to ensure resilience and competitive pricing.

The ministry is working closely with state governments, many of which have committed to provide roughly half of the financial incentives offered by the central government for semiconductor projects. The conference saw registrations exceeding 40,000, with about 30% coming from abroad, and hosted over 620 exhibitors, including more than 300 foreign companies.
