India pulls out of inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup to focus on Brazil friendly in Kolkata
The All India Football Federation announced that India will not take part in the first FIFA ASEAN Cup, opting instead to play a friendly against Brazil in early October.
India has cancelled its participation in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup after the All India Football Federation determined that the tournament overlaps with a high-profile friendly against five-time world champions Brazil. Deputy secretary general M Satyanarayanan explained that the clash, with Brazil playing in Kolkata on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium, makes it impossible to compete in both events. The nation had initially agreed to join the competition and was drawn with Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore in Division 1 Group A. Earlier plans to send a developmental side to the cup while the senior squad faced Brazil were abandoned.
Consequently, the AIFF will devote the September-October FIFA international window to other friendly matches. The decision means India misses the chance to face leading Southeast Asian teams in a FIFA-sanctioned setting and comes as the side continues to seek higher-ranked opposition after failing to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
