India raises EPF wage ceiling to Rs 25,000, expanding mandatory coverage

The Union Cabinet approved raising the Employees' Provident Fund wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026, bringing millions of workers into mandatory coverage.

On September 16, the Union Cabinet approved a rise in the statutory EPF wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, with the change taking effect the following day. The government projects that over 5.1 million additional workers will fall under mandatory EPF coverage, marking the first adjustment since September 2014. Employees whose basic salary plus dearness allowance now falls within the Rs 15,001-Rs 25,000 band will be enrolled, while those earning above Rs 25,000 can still join if employer arrangements permit.

The employee contribution rises from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,000 monthly, and employer contributions increase proportionally, affecting both EPF and EPS allocations. EPS contributions could rise from about Rs 1,249.50 to roughly Rs 2,082.50, potentially enhancing future pensions for eligible members. The EDLI insurance ceiling may also increase from Rs 7 lakh to an estimated Rs 10.5 lakh, pending official notification. Workers are advised to review their salary slips, EPF passbooks, and HR policies to understand the impact on their net pay and long-term benefits.

Why it matters

The higher wage ceiling expands social security coverage and alters retirement savings and insurance benefits for millions of Indian workers.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Center coverage emphasizes a ruling-party MP’s call for the Prime Minister to intervene and ensure uniform, time-bound implementation of the higher EPS pension, highlighting procedural problems for pensioners, while right-leaning coverage reports the cabinet’s decision to raise the EPF wage ceiling, stressing the number of workers newly covered and the contribution increases.

CENTER

Frames the story as a political push for the government to address lingering implementation issues and procedural delays in the EPS pension.

RIGHT

Frames the story as a policy announcement about expanding mandatory EPF coverage through a wage-ceiling increase and its financial impact.

The right emphasises

  • rise in statutory EPF wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000
  • over 5.1 million additional workers will fall under mandatory coverage
  • employee and employer contributions increase proportionally
