India's 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor now fully operational, freeing rail capacity

India has finished its Dedicated Freight Corridor network, creating a 2,843-km set of tracks for goods trains and freeing space on conventional lines for passenger services.

With the commissioning of the remaining sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, India now operates a continuous 2,843-km freight-only railway network, linking Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Maharashtra and New Sahnewal in Punjab to New Sonnagar in Bihar. The dedicated lines enable freight trains to travel at speeds above 50 km/h, roughly double that of conventional routes, and support more than 400 daily services, including double-stack container trains.

By separating cargo from passenger traffic, the corridors free capacity on existing tracks, paving the way for additional passenger trains and faster journeys. Analysts highlight that the true impact will hinge on upgraded feeder connections, competitive pricing models and the development of Gati Shakti terminals and multimodal logistics parks. While rail already offers a cost advantage over road, its share of freight remains around 20%; the DFC aims to shift more cargo from highways to rails, boosting supply-chain efficiency and competitiveness. Future plans include a proposed 2,052-km corridor linking Dankuni to Surat and several other corridor concepts under review.
