India's arms sales to Europe surge past $850 million amid Ukraine war

India's defence sector has exported roughly $872 million in ammunition to European nations since the Ukraine conflict began, a sharp rise from the previous four years.

Amid the Russia-Ukraine war, European nations are rapidly rebuilding their ammunition stockpiles, opening a major opportunity for Indian defence firms. According to trade figures, India’s exports of ammunition and related products to Europe have jumped to $872 million over the four years following the invasion, up from $49.2 million in the preceding four-year span. Rajesh Kumar Singh, the defence secretary, highlighted that India now stands as the continent’s third-largest arms exporter and the second-largest supplier of ammunition to 13 Central and Eastern European countries, trailing only South Korea.

The surge aligns with the EU’s ReArm Europe initiative, which encourages increased defence spending and production capacity. Both public-sector and private Indian manufacturers are benefitting, while overall Indian defence exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore in the 2025-26 fiscal year, up from ₹23,622 crore the year before, serving more than 80 overseas customers.

Why it matters

The growth underscores India's expanding influence in the global arms market and Europe's reliance on non-Western suppliers for critical munitions.
