India's consumer durables market eyes major growth and localisation push by 2030
A joint BCG-CII report projects the Indian consumer durables sector to expand 8-10% annually, reaching up to Rs 3.25 lakh crore by 2030, with a sizable localisation opportunity.
According to a BCG and CII joint analysis, India's consumer durables sector is set to grow 8-10% each year, potentially reaching Rs 3-3.25 lakh crore by 2030. This expansion opens a large window for domestic value addition, though the country presently domesticates only about half of the sector's potential. The report warns that without faster localisation, imports will continue to fill the gap, making component manufacturing the next competitive frontier.
Local sourcing shares differ across categories, with TVs and air conditioners at the lower end and refrigerators and washing machines higher. Critical parts like TV panels, AC compressors, refrigerator insulation and washing-machine motors are difficult to produce locally because of technology access, scale and cost issues. The authors call for stronger component ecosystems, better testing and certification, technology partnerships, and improved logistics to boost global competitiveness.
Why it matters
The outlook highlights how boosting local component production could reshape India's appliance market and reduce reliance on imports.
