India's DRDO validates high-altitude combat parachute in Ladakh test
The Defence Research and Development Organisation confirmed a successful trial of its home-grown Military Combat Parachute System from 22,000 feet in the Nyoma-Mudh drop zone, Ladakh.
DRDO announced that its indigenously designed Military Combat Parachute System was put through a high-altitude trial at the Nyoma-Mudh drop zone, one of the world’s loftiest parachute sites. Three test jumpers, led by Wing Commander Rahul Jha, exited an aircraft at 22,000 feet above sea level amid -15 °C weather, deploying the chute at 20,000 feet and touching down at 13,700 feet. The parachute, equipped with a locally built para-computer, oxygen apparatus and specialized jumpsuits, proved its tactical viability in harsh environments.
The system, also used by the Indian Air Force for jumps above 25,000 feet, features reduced descent rates, enhanced steering and integration with the NavIC navigation network, reducing reliance on foreign technology. Developed by DRDO’s ADRDE and the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory in Bengaluru, the MCPS aims to cut maintenance dependence on external suppliers during conflicts.
Why it matters
The test shows India can field a self-reliant high-altitude parachute, strengthening its military autonomy.
