India's exports to core BRICS economies jump 34% in April-August, led by China

India’s exports to the four core BRICS countries rose 34% to $19.9 bn in the April-August period, with shipments to China surging 39%.

According to the Indian commerce ministry, exports to the core BRICS bloc - Brazil, Russia, South Africa and China - climbed from $14.9 bn to $19.9 bn between April and August, a 34% rise. Trade with China led the surge, expanding 39% to $9.6 bn, while South Africa’s exports jumped 58%, and Brazil and Russia grew 13% and 11% respectively. The four economies now represent 9.2% of India’s total exports, up from 8.1% a year earlier.

The ministry noted that growth to the core BRICS is nearly three times faster than to the broader BRICS grouping, underscoring their strategic importance. In parallel, exports to Japan rose 43% to $3.43 bn, to Italy by about 30% to $3.92 bn, and to South Korea increased 22% to $3.21 bn, driven by minerals, fuels, electronics and other industrial goods. The data highlight India’s deepening trade ties with both the BRICS core and key Asian economies.

Why it matters
