During the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and reiterated India’s worries over the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which President Donald Trump recently signed into law. The act grants the US president authority to levy tariffs of up to 100% on imports from the five largest purchasers of Russian crude and gas, a group that currently includes India.
Jaishankar and Rubio also exchanged views on the Gulf region and the war in Ukraine. The bill cleared the US House of Representatives with a 262-159 vote and the Senate with an 86-11 vote before being enacted. In response, India’s external affairs ministry warned that the sanctions could strain bilateral relations and disrupt the global energy market, emphasizing the need to safeguard trade and ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens through diversified sourcing. The ministry said it will coordinate with industry bodies to mitigate any fallout.
