India's fuel prices hold steady amid rising global oil tensions
State-run oil firms left petrol and diesel rates unchanged on October 16, while CNG prices rose in several cities as global crude costs climbed.
India's state oil enterprises maintained existing retail prices for petrol and diesel on October 16, even as the US-Iran confrontation pushed global crude higher. The only domestic price movement was an increase in compressed natural gas, up to ₹2 in eight cities, notably Chennai, Mathura and Meerut, while New Delhi, Rewari and the NCR region saw no change. Internationally, Brent crude fell 41 cents to $105.51 a barrel and US WTI dropped 54 cents to $97.43, reflecting mixed market reactions to Middle-East volatility and potential US easing of sanctions on the “shadow fleet.”
The International Energy Agency pledged to release over 20 million barrels of diesel and any remaining emergency reserves, though market participants remain skeptical. Haitong Futures warned that genuine price relief would require a reduction in regional tensions. Ongoing attacks on shipping lanes and renewed strikes by Iran and Houthi forces continue to add risk premiums to oil markets.
Why it matters
Stable fuel prices affect daily costs for Indian consumers while global oil volatility could soon impact the market.
