India's graduate employment rate hits five-year low, CMIE data shows

The share of graduates in India who are working or actively job-searching fell to its lowest level in five years, according to CMIE data for September.

CMIE reported that the proportion of Indian graduates who are either employed or looking for work dropped to a five-year trough in September. The decline reflects a faster growth in the graduate-aged population than in available jobs. Consequently, fewer educated individuals are participating in the labour market. The trend highlights mounting challenges for India's employment sector.

Why it matters

A shrinking share of employed graduates signals growing underemployment and potential economic strain in India.
