India's monsoon patterns shift, sparking deadly floods and climate alarms

Intense, short-lived rains have caused deadly floods across India since late July, highlighting a shift in monsoon behavior linked to climate change.

Since late July, heavy monsoon bursts have killed over 100 individuals across India, with Assam alone seeing more than 120,000 people affected by flooding. Researchers note that while total seasonal rainfall has not risen markedly, the distribution has changed: long dry periods are followed by intense, short-duration rain that overwhelms rivers, drainage and soil. Climate scientists attribute this shift to a warmer atmosphere holding more moisture and to El Niño, but stress it reflects a structural change in the monsoon system.

India's agricultural sector and rapidly expanding urban areas are ill-prepared, as outdated flood-control designs and insufficient climate-proofing in construction exacerbate damage. Experts call for impact-based warnings and a redesign of infrastructure, water storage and farming practices to cope with the emerging pattern of extreme rainfall.
