India's oil import bill spikes as global crude prices near $100 per barrel

India's oil import costs are rising sharply after Brent futures hit about $99 a barrel and US WTI climbed to nearly $94, driven by renewed West Asia tensions.

Global crude prices climbed sharply, with Brent futures gaining more than 2% to around $99 a barrel and US WTI up about 3% to nearly $94, pushing India's oil import bill higher. The surge is linked to renewed hostilities between the US and Iran and recent attacks on Saudi energy facilities, which threaten oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. India, importing over 88% of its crude, is vulnerable to such price swings, which could widen the dollar-denominated import bill, strain the trade balance and weigh on the rupee.

Higher crude costs may also feed into domestic inflation via fuel, transport and other energy-related expenses, though retail petrol and diesel prices have been frozen for more than three months. Fuel marketers such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation face tighter margins after previous price hikes failed to fully offset earlier oil price rises. The Oil Ministry's PPAC reported a 56% rise in the April-July import bill to $63.4 billion, while the average basket price of crude crossed the $100 mark.
