India's Pralay missile joins the race for agile short-range ballistic weapons

Short-range ballistic rockets are proving difficult to stop, and India's new Pralay missile showcases mobility and terminal-phase maneuverability.

The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have highlighted how short-range ballistic missiles strain modern air-defence, as their brief exo-atmospheric phase leaves little time for detection and interception, especially when they can maneuver in the terminal phase. Russia's extensive use of Iskander-M rockets and Iran's missile salvos against Israel have tested systems like Iron Dome and Arrow, revealing defensive gaps.

Against this backdrop, India's Defence Research and Development Organisation has created the Pralay, a canisterised, road-mobile tactical missile designed for rapid deployment and conventional strikes that align with India's No First Use nuclear stance. The missile can travel 150 to 500 km, carry payloads of 350-1,000 kg in forms such as high-explosive fragmentation, penetration-blast or runway-denial submunitions, and features solid-fuel thrust with terminal-phase maneuverability, placing it in the quasi-ballistic category with China's Dongfeng-12 and Russia's Iskander. Planned for integration into the Integrated Rocket Force alongside BrahMos, Nirbhay and Pinaka, Pralay offers speed, unpredictable trajectory and flexible warhead options, making it one of the most capable short-range systems in its class.
