India's premium smartphone market shifts toward subscription and upgrade models
Subscription services for high-end phones are gaining traction in India, with firms reporting rapid month-on-month growth and consumers opting for flexible upgrade cycles.
In India, the premium smartphone segment is increasingly being serviced through subscription-style offerings rather than outright purchases. BytePe reports monthly growth of 20-30% in its subscription line, which now represents 95% of its clientele and focuses on iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy models. Servify observes that users spending over ₹1 lakh tend to upgrade every 12-24 months, supported by extended EMI periods of up to 24 months and assured buy-back guarantees.
Samsung’s Galaxy Forever and Google’s Pixel Upgrade Program combine financing with trade-in benefits, blurring the line between loan and subscription. Despite this momentum, Counterpoint Research warns that subscription-based ownership is still in its early stages, with success hinging on affordable monthly rates, attractive resale values, and seamless availability across channels. The trend coincides with a projected 12% dip in overall smartphone sales for the 2026 festive season, while the high-end market remains a key demand driver.
