India's Rahul reassured after cramps, Padikkal scores maiden Test century

On the opening day of the Galle Test, India’s KL Rahul retired hurt after experiencing cramps, but batting coach Sitanshu Kotak assured that the senior batsman is now fine. Rahul had contributed a steady 77 from 162 balls before his exit, forming a pivotal 150-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal, back in Tests after his last appearance in Perth in 2024, reached an unbeaten 131, his maiden international century, and handled Sri Lanka’s bowlers, especially left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, with a range of shots.

Kotak also praised Sai Sudharsan’s development and the new-ball partnership’s ability to adjust to different phases of the innings. India concluded the day at 288 for two, with Rishabh Pant on 27 and Shubman Gill dismissed by Jayasuriya. The only lingering concern was Rahul’s fitness for the next session, but the coach’s update eased worries.
