India's sugar retail price drops 3.85% to Rs 62.57 per kg
Retail sugar prices in India fell 3.85% to Rs 62.57 per kilogram, while wholesale rates slipped to Rs 57.62 per kilogram.
India's sugar market showed a modest weekly retreat, with the average retail price sliding 3.85% to Rs 62.57 per kilogram, down from Rs 65.08 a week earlier. Wholesale prices fell more sharply, reaching Rs 57.62 per kilogram on September 2, compared with Rs 60.39 the previous week. Although the decline eases recent inflationary pressure, retail prices are still roughly 27% higher than a month ago, when they averaged Rs 49.33 per kilogram.
Retailers are reluctant to discount existing inventory bought at higher costs, so the lower wholesale rates have not yet fully reached shoppers. Industry sources estimate it takes about ten days for wholesale changes to affect retail pricing. The government has responded with measures including permission for 10 lakh tonnes of sugar imports and stricter stock-holding rules for bulk users, while noting that domestic sugar stocks remain adequate despite a revised production forecast for the 2025-26 marketing year.
