India's Urban Housing Drive Hits 1 Crore Homes Completed, Targets Another Crore Families
The government reports that more than 1 crore urban homes have been finished under the PMAY-U scheme and that the second phase will aim to assist another 1 crore families through self-construction, rental and loan-subsidy components.
Government figures released by the Press Information Bureau show that the flagship urban housing programme, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), has delivered over 1 crore homes and sanctioned 1.25 crore units as of August 9, 2026. The second phase, PMAY-U 2.0, will extend support to another 1 crore families through four verticals: Beneficiary-Led Construction, which offers up to Rs 2.5 lakh to EWS families building on their own land; Affordable Housing in Partnership, providing similar subsidies for units built by public or private developers; Affordable Rental Housing, aimed at migrants and low-income workers; and an Interest Subsidy Scheme that reduces loan costs for eligible borrowers.
So far, 14.40 lakh homes are earmarked for self-construction, 2.48 lakh for partnership projects, 13,046 rental units and 1.36 lakh homes covered by the loan subsidy. The scheme has also boosted female ownership, with 1 crore homes registered in the name of women or jointly. A common digital platform now geo-tags and monitors construction across states, Union Territories and urban local bodies, with the first phase running until September 2026 and PMAY-U 2.0 continuing through 2029.
