India's US export share stays near 20% despite Trump tariffs and diversification push

India’s exports to the United States continued to represent about one-fifth of its total shipments, even after tariff hikes under Donald Trump and efforts to broaden trade partners.

Commerce ministry figures reveal that the United States kept its position as India’s leading export market, accounting for around 20% of total shipments in the 12 months through July. Tariff rates imposed by the Trump administration reached as high as 50% before being cut to 10%, but the US share of Indian exports remained stable. Exports to China grew markedly, yet the US still eclipsed all other destinations, with the UAE in second place and China third.

India has added roughly 500 new product lines, especially in electronics and engineering, and signed several free-trade agreements, though many are not yet in force. Trade officials stress that diversification will take two to three years to meaningfully reduce reliance on any single market.

Why it matters

India's continued reliance on the US market affects its trade strategy and economic resilience.
