India's wholesale price index spikes to 11.39% in September on higher food and fuel costs
India's wholesale inflation rose to 11.39% in September, up from 9.92% in August, driven by surging food, fuel and manufactured goods prices.
Government figures released on Wednesday indicate that India's wholesale price inflation accelerated to 11.39% in September, up from 9.92% the month before. The Wholesale Price Index climbed to 112.5, with all three major categories—primary articles, fuel and power, and manufactured products—recording higher year-on-year rates. Fuel and power inflation surged to 25.85%, led by crude petroleum and natural gas, while electricity prices fell slightly.
Food inflation increased to 8.66%, and the manufactured sector saw price gains across basic metals, chemicals, textiles, rubber, plastic and electrical equipment. Cumulative wholesale inflation for April-September stood at 9.85%, and related producer price indices also rose. The next set of data is scheduled for release on November 16.
Why it matters
Rising wholesale prices signal higher costs for producers, which could translate into increased consumer inflation and affect economic policy.
