India says foreign-inspired terrorism largely contained, homegrown threat nearly gone
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan stated that foreign-inspired terrorism is now barely visible in India and homegrown terrorism has almost disappeared.
At a briefing in Hyderabad, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan announced that foreign-inspired terrorism has become virtually invisible throughout India, and that homegrown terrorist activity is nearing an end. He highlighted that Indian Police Service trainees must now focus on combating narcotics trafficking, cybercrime and illegal immigration. Mohan further asserted that militant Naxalism has ceased and that insurgency in the North-East has been reduced to minimal levels.
These statements come as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the first BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, called for stronger regional collaboration to disrupt terrorist financing and prevent safe havens. Shah emphasized India’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and the need for collective security among BIMSTEC nations. The comments reflect a broader governmental push to reinforce regional cooperation against terrorism and organized crime.
Why it matters
India's claim of a near-eradication of terrorism signals a shift in security priorities and regional cooperation efforts.
