India says Russia-Ukraine war won’t end through oil bans, urges dialogue
Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar warned that restricting oil or mineral sales will not resolve the five-year Russia-Ukraine conflict, stressing that only diplomacy can end it.
India’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said measures targeting Russian oil or other commodities will not bring an end to the five-year war with Ukraine, insisting that dialogue and negotiations are essential. He argued that buying or boycotting oil, alumina, minerals, metals or fertiliser cannot solve the dispute. Jaishankar also pointed to the “visible resilience” of trade between India and Ukraine, which spans sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, fertilisers, machinery, chemicals and consumer products.
He noted that the partnership continues to grow and new possibilities are appearing even as the conflict persists. The remarks were made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv.
