India signs 14 green hydrogen contracts worth 311,520 tonnes in early 2026

Former NITI Aayog chief Amitabh Kant announced that India secured 14 binding green hydrogen supply deals covering 311,520 metric tonnes annually, with 62% earmarked for export.

In a post on X, Amitabh Kant, former NITI Aayog CEO and G20 Sherpa, said India has signed 14 binding green hydrogen supply contracts during the first four months of 2026, amounting to 311,520 metric tonnes of annual output. Of this, 62% is slated for export markets, reflecting India's ambition to supply low-carbon fuels worldwide. BloombergNEF’s India Transition Factbook 2026 reports that these contracts make India the leader in signed volumes for the period and lift it to third place globally in cumulative agreements.

The contracts also involve green ammonia, produced from renewable-powered electrolysis, which can serve as fertilizer feedstock and a transport medium for hydrogen. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by a ₹19,744 crore budget, supports electrolyser manufacturing and production capacity, with 3,000 MW of electrolyser capacity awarded to 15 firms and 862,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen capacity allocated to 18 companies. These initiatives aim to build a full ecosystem from renewable power to export-ready clean fuels.

Why it matters

The deals signal India's emergence as a major exporter of clean hydrogen, shaping global energy markets and climate goals.
