India tightens highway construction rules, penalising contractors for fatal accident zones
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced penalties for EPC contractors whose projects on national highways experience repeat fatal accidents.
To curb rising deaths on national highways, the ministry unveiled a new framework that holds contractors accountable for recurring fatal crashes on the stretches they build. The rules also limit subcontracting to no more than 30% of a project's value. Contractors found responsible for multiple fatalities will face financial sanctions. The move aims to improve safety standards across the highway network.
Why it matters
It seeks to reduce highway fatalities by making contractors financially responsible for unsafe construction.
