India to Commission Indigenous Multi-Role Warship Samarthak on Oct. 16
The Indian Navy will commission the domestically built warship Samarthak on October 16.
The Indian Navy is set to bring the indigenous warship Samarthak into service on October 16. Constructed by Larsen & Toubro Ltd as part of the Government of India's Make in India initiative, the ship is primarily intended for maritime surveillance and patrol duties. It is capable of conducting Low Intensity Maritime Operations, serving as a launch platform for target trials, and acting as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems.
Additionally, Samarthak can be configured for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and can be converted into a limited-capacity hospital ship or perform salvage tasks. Its combat suite integrates home-grown sensors, weapons and electronic systems optimized for tough maritime environments. The ship’s crest features an Indian elephant emerging from waves, reflecting strength, intelligence and agility, with the motto “Victory is Our Sole Aim.”
Why it matters
The commissioning showcases India's growing self-reliance in naval defence and expands its maritime capabilities.
