India to install first offshore wind prototype off Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi coast

India will deploy a 6.25 MW turbine about 1.65 km off Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, in a ₹77 crore pilot offshore wind project.

A pilot offshore wind installation is slated for India’s southern coast, featuring a single 6.25 MW turbine positioned roughly 1.65 km from the inner harbour breakwater at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Ltd is handling the full contract, covering design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning and a two-year operation-and-maintenance phase, at an estimated cost of ₹77 crore.

Electricity generated will be transmitted to the state grid, with on-shore meters tracking both export and import in line with Tangedco and Tantransco regulations. Officials say the prototype will build capabilities in wind-resource assessment, marine logistics, port operations, local supply-chain mobilisation and grid connectivity, essential for scaling up offshore wind projects. As of June 30 2026, India’s installed wind capacity totals 57,443 MW, with Tamil Nadu ranking second after Gujarat at more than 12,273 MW.

Why it matters

Developing offshore wind know-how will help India expand clean energy and cut fossil-fuel dependence.
