India to launch one of the world’s biggest renewable-powered green ammonia plants with ADB and Japan backing

The Asian Development Bank and Japan have agreed to finance a $100 million loan for AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited to convert an old gas-based plant into a green ammonia facility producing about 1.1 million tonnes annually.

The Asian Development Bank and the Government of Japan have signed financing agreements with AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited to develop a large-scale green ammonia plant in India. The $100 million loan, sourced from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2 and financed by JICA, is the first investment under the ACCEL programme, which seeks to improve energy security across Asia. The project will repurpose a former natural-gas-based ammonia and urea facility to produce roughly 1.1 million tonnes of green ammonia each year using renewable power.

Officials say the plant will support the growth of India’s green ammonia export market and lower emissions from fertilizer manufacturing. ADB President Masato Kanda emphasized the project’s demonstration of renewable energy replacing fossil fuels in heavy industry, and Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama linked it to broader efforts to diversify regional energy supplies and enhance economic resilience.

Why it matters

It demonstrates large-scale renewable energy use in fertilizer production, reducing emissions and diversifying Asia’s energy supply.
