India to reshape US trade pact as conditions evolve, says Commerce Minister
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the interim India-US trade framework announced in February will be finalized with revised terms, as India pushes for lower US tariffs on its goods.
At a gathering of the PHDCCI, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal explained that the interim trade agreement between India and the United States, announced in February, will be reshaped to reflect altered circumstances, with India demanding tariff reductions that would place its products ahead of competitors in the US market. He said negotiations are also under way with several regions, including Israel, Chile, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union.
Goyal added that talks with Canada are moving more quickly, that discussions with the South African Customs Union will start soon, and that a pact with Mexico is slated to begin next week. He noted that the trade ministers of the United Kingdom and Canada will visit India shortly, following the July India-UK trade agreement and a scheduled JETCO meeting. Earlier this month Goyal met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of a G20 trade ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee to discuss the bilateral pact.
