India to unveil domestically built 280 kmph bullet train prototypes by early 2027

A decade after the bullet-train project began, India’s inaugural high-speed rail line linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad is set to debut domestically produced rolling stock. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai awarded BEML Limited a Rs 866.87 crore contract to design, manufacture and commission two eight-coach prototypes engineered for 280 kmph operation. Production will take place at BEML’s newly established Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru, with the first set expected by March 2027 for extensive trials by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation.

The trains will offer fully air-conditioned chair-car seating, world-class passenger amenities, infotainment systems, reclining and rotatable seats, and dedicated spaces for divyangjans. While the initial units target 280 kmph, the ministry plans future models capable of 350 kmph, with aluminium sets being explored for higher speeds. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the initiative as a key "Make in India" milestone and a foundation for seven additional high-speed corridors announced in the Union Budget.
