Indian Army Introduces 'Bharat Rice' to Boost Ration Quality for Troops
The Indian Army launched a new 'Bharat Rice' brand for defence rations and signed an MoU with the Food Corporation of India to use its facilities during emergencies.
In a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, the Indian Army unveiled 'Bharat Rice', a premium rice brand designed to improve the quality of meals for service members. The initiative follows troop feedback and includes a memorandum of understanding with the Food Corporation of India to tap its storage and distribution network during operational contingencies. Under the new system, the rice will be delivered straight to army supply depots, notably those in Ladakh and the North-east, rather than being collected from local FCI sites.
The product will meet specific defence milling standards and be distributed by Nafed beginning FY 2026-27. Singh highlighted that nutrition, alongside equipment and training, is essential for soldier morale and readiness, especially as future conflicts may demand rapid logistical responses. The MoU is presented as a step toward strengthening the army’s supply chain resilience.
