Indian construction workers at US Milan consulate secure €45,000 payouts in historic settlement

Over 60 mostly Indian labourers building the US consulate in Milan signed agreements to receive about €45,000 each from a €31 million settlement with Caddell Construction over alleged labour abuses.

Workers constructing the new US consulate compound in Milan, the majority from India, gathered at a Milan hotel to sign settlement deals that grant each roughly €45,000. The payouts arise from a €31 million agreement reached last month with Alabama-based Caddell Construction, which prosecutors say is the largest labour-exploitation settlement in Europe. More than 60 labourers participated, and the signing took place on Wednesday after the process began Tuesday.

Why it matters

The settlement highlights serious labour-rights issues in European construction projects and provides substantial compensation to vulnerable migrant workers.
